Domestic abuse is so much more that just physical violence. It is an entire pattern of behaviors designed to establish and maintain control over another person.
The Power and Control Wheel pictured here is a visual representation of domestic abuse. At the center of the wheel is power and control, because the need for power and control is at the center of all the abuser's behaviors.
The outside of the wheel is physical violence, because it is violence and the threat of violence that allows the abuser to maintain all of the other abusive behaviors.
The wedges throughout the circle illustrate the many other abusive behaviors that allow the abuser to maintain the control he's established. Many victims struggle to identify what they are experiencing as abuse if the perpetrator has not physically hit them. The power and control wheel helps show that there is much more to domestic abuse than physical violence.
